about

Stephen Kellogg. The man influenced my entire life from the moment we opened for him at Mount Holyoke College in 2001 or so. He was “asking” his manager and cousin Jess… for the masters of “Lucky 11” that were just finished to be on the stage in front of him during sound check. It was so important to him to not let them out of his sight. As he continued to soundcheck and play the coolest version of Elton’s “Tiny Dancer” (do I have to specify which Elton?), I realized that he could perform his songs and travel and work without a band. It didn’t mean it was his preference or his goal- but he could. And playing saxophone, I could not.
I needed to learn how to play guitar and sing. Stephen helped me at so many points, whether it was experience he shared, his vocal lesson tape, finding the right guitar, and strings… and I’ve written and used his name in songs (listen to Moments)…
Over the years, obviously there has been improvement- and I’m putting this song out with vocals we recorded just a couple of years ago… even though the music was recorded almost 10 years ago -produced and engineered by Dave Chalfant (also bass and electric guitars), with Keith “Kit” Uth on keyboards and Brian “Boots” Factor on drums… which was Stephen’s band “The Sixers”… and the producer of Lucky 11.
I love these guys, and miss these guys. I was so fortunate to share the stage and van with them many, many times and make memories- even while going back to work while they would travel to the next show.
The song was written at School Street Bistro in Westfield Massachusetts on a stormy night before a show. The bartender was playing the “appear positive” game with a particular customer but her face showed absolute disdain in the mirror when she turned away. It reminded me that we all play a part- but we all have another side.
The cover art was done by our friend, the incredible artist Ted Smykal and Wendy Berman. I asked him to create with some specific guidelines and the result was mind blowing. Take a few minutes and really see another side… Thank you to everyone involved.
I hope you like this one.
